Keeping an Eye on the Road

One last photo from Monica S. with the following comments: “. . . saw this bike at Saturday Market . . . Some simple, yet unique changes have turned this bike it to a functional piece of art . . . VERY PORTLAND! Thanks again for the final opportunity to share my photos and my love for such a great city!”

This is a great photo, thank you Monica. The bike is very cool… a little creepy with the eye basket… but very cool!

Doorway to...

Here is the final photo submission from John K. who describes it as:” …it's a garden door that leads from Mt. Tabor Park into somewhere..... I kind of like not knowing exactly where it leads. The picture was taken last winter, on one of those days where there is fresh snow to decorate the neighborhood, but not enough to prevent taking a walk to enjoy it.” Great photo John, thank you!

Frozen Rose

Here is the last submission from Shelly S. who states: “The crazy weather this week gave me the chance to capture our last rosebud, frozen solid by the cold front that passed through. Had fun with this contest, and enjoyed seeing everyone’s photos!”

Thank you Shelly and we appreciate all the photo’s you submitted over the past few weeks.

The Complete Portland Package

We received this submission from Jonathan N. and I couldn't agree more when he states: "You'd be hard-pressed to get a photo that symbolizes Portland more. You've got a funky bicycle, coffee (definitely organic ;), bridge, the skyline, and rain clouds. I guess maybe if I had some protesters on the bridge that would make it more Portland." Great pic Jonathan, thank you!

Steel Sky

Here is the final photo submission from Adam T who stated the following: "I am sad to see this contest come to an end....it has been a lot of fun. I looked forward to every weeks entry. This contest gave me a chance to push myself, as I feed off of competition. Everyone in the contest had awesome photos, and there was no lack of competition."

Thank you very much Adam for taking such a huge competitors role in this contest. We have enjoyed watching your photos come in on a weekly basis from the very beginning.

The Portland Trio

We received some great photos from Tiffany D. this morning. We have had some complications in the past few weeks trying to share photos from Picasaweb so this is the first time I have been able to view anything she has sent. Thus, I felt obligated to post all four photos on our webpage as this is the final week of this contest. Great pics Tiffany and thank you for your perseverance.

Portland Fogged In

Robert G. chose to submit this photo as his final entry. We have received several great photos from Robert during out contest and a couple of them have won. This one is his favorite however, so he chose to submit it for one last time. It is a great view of Portland that truly captures the current season. Thank you Robert!

Vietnam Veterans Living Memorial

Kathy M. sent in this final photo with the following narrative: “I visited the Garden of Solace - the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Living Memorial in Hoyt Arboretum - on Veterans Day. I was honoring a neighborhood friend who gave his life in Vietnam so many years ago. Bouquets of flowers scattered the granite walls to mark the occasion. This picture caught my eye, as if even the granite were weeping.” Amazing photo Kathy, thank you!

Snow Bear's

A great final submission from John W. with the following remarks to all: "Here's my parting shot. With winter upon us, dark days and cold, there's one thing that keeps us warm and walks with us across the bridge of life ( yeh I know it's sappy) . . . our friends. Keep warm everyone, it's been a great ride and you are a wonderful bunch of creative people, maybe I'll meet some of you someday. Keep shooting ! - John W." Thank you John, and yes, it's been fun!

One More Week...

We are in our final week of the World Cup Coffee Portland photo contest. As this is a holiday week, we will take submissions until Tuesday, November 30th. No photos will be posted to the web-page between Thursday (11-25) and Sunday (11-28). The final weekly winner will be announced on Wednesday (12-1). Good luck and thank you for your participation!

Week 16 Winner

This week’s winner is Adam T. with his picture titled Park Colors. He openly admits he tweaked the colors a bit to give this photo its pizzazz, but we all agree… it works! Great photo from our North Park Blocks, thank you Adam.

Mt. Hood at Dusk

Here is a great photo from John K. capturing more beautiful colors of the season. He went on to state: “Here's a shot of Mt Hood, taken in the late afternoon from the Lolo Pass Road, which is a great way to get from Hood River to Zigzag. A detour to Lost Lake along the way is highly recommended.” Thank you John.

Emerald Staircase

I realize I say it a lot, but one of my favorite things about this city and this time of year is the abundance of color. Monica S. illustrates this well with this photo I have labeled “The Emerald Staircase”. Okay, I will admit, I was a huge fan of the Wizard of Oz as a kid… still am actually.

Capturing the Fleeting Sun

Here is a great photo from Michael B. illustrating one of my favorite things about Spring and Fall. We get no shortage of rain which is okay because it keeps everything so beautiful and green. Every now and then, the sun will pop out from behind the clouds to briefly remind us that it is there and in turn lift our spirits. When the timing is right, you can capture a picture like this one. Thank you Michael for sharing this picture with us.

The 'Rose' City

We live in such a fantastically beautiful city. So many things make this the case, but we often forget what characteristics have made us famous. Robert G. captures this great photo illustrating why we are referred to as the ‘Rose City’. So much color throughout so much of the year… oh, and they smell good to. Thank you Robert!

Very Zen...

I can’t say it any better than Shelly S.: ” I love the beautiful photos of the Japanese Garden John has sent in, but you don’t always need a perfect day! Here’s one of my favorites, taken on a cloudy day, with the perfect matching quote by a Zen master."

When you hear the splash
Of the water drops that fall
Into the stone bowl,
You will feel that all the dust
Of your mind is washed away.
- Sen-No-Rikyu

Sacred Art of the Sand Mandala

This is a great photo and story from Kathy M. “Five Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Phukhang Khangtsen Monastery of southern India, renowned for their construction of sacred sand mandalas, were at the Portland Central Library last week. Portland was part of a three month multi-city tour. Look at the concentration and precision displayed by this monk, despite all the activity around him. Two monks worked all-day for about four days to complete this mandala (still incomplete when this picture was taken).” I sure wish I had seen this in person. Thank you Kathy!

Goldenrod Crab Spider

John W. steps out of the Japanese Garden and onto his front porch to take this picture. He offers the following narrative:” Well its spider time in Portland. This photo of a Goldenrod Crab Spider (had to look it up!) was taken one morning on my front porch. I've never seen another but this one was quite beautiful… for a spider, ugh, they still give me the creeps”. Great shot and well said John, thank you!

Park Colors

I am surprised it has taken me this long, but last week I made a rather big error. I overlooked this submission from a regular contestant. Due to this fact, I am allowing Adam T. to submit two photo’s into this week’s contest. This is the photo titled “Park Colors” that Adam submitted last week. He states: “I have found that some photos should not be touched and others are just waiting for it. With that being said, this one got the full tweak!” Sorry for the mistake Adam, please keep the photo’s coming.

Week 15 Winner

Portland is a very ‘dog friendly’ town. In some cases we allow our four legged members of the family to get away with murder as my front yard will often attest. It is so nice to see a good mannered well behaved canine flaunting its obedience skills. Mike B. captured what I am referring to with this week’s contest winner. Nice work Mike!

Two weeks left to submit those photos everyone. Please keep them coming and thank you to everyone who has made this contest so much fun!

Fall Reflections

One of my favorite things about this time of year is the fact that you can drive through a monsoon on one stretch of road, then take the corner and drive on perfectly dry pavement. This photo from Monica S. illustrates what I am referring to. There are several parts to this photo that I really enjoy, but ir screams ‘Fall in Portland, Or.’ Thank you Monica.

Goose Hollow Wall

If there is one thing we Portlandians have an abundance of, it’s color. Interpret that as you will, but this photo from Molly C. shows the beauty that can come from concrete, rain, surrounding foliage and neglect. Cool photo Molly, thank you.

A Rock at Japanese Gardens

John W has submitted another photo from his breathtaking Fall day at the Japanese Gardens several years back. As he stated earlier, rarely does the perfect light on the perfect day at the perfect time of day at the ideal location come together to create lighting like this. Amazing series of photos John, thank you.

Taking a Rest on It's Way Down

This fall photo was submitted by Michael B. who wrote the following dialog to go with it: "This photo is of a leaf at Tryon Creek State Park in Portland. I love how sometimes leaves that have fallen from a tree don't necessarily make it all the way to the ground, but instead find a different resting spot. Here, it had just rained, too." Thanks for the great pic Michael.

Stil wet... Just a bit colder.

John K. submitted this photo with the following description: "The attached picture was taken on a very hot, sunny day in July, 2010 (which seems to me like a long time ago, now that Daylight Savings Time and the dry weather are gone). The kids are playing in a wall of water at the Salmon Street Springs fountain." Great shot John, thank you!

A Girl and Her Dog

When I received this photo from Mike B. I read his short description, than opened the photo and immediately laughed out loud. It is no secret that I am a dog lover. The news is that my fiance and I just ordered our first puppy together. For the first time in my life, I had to consider the temperament of the breed and how good they would be with children. As much as I love Great Danes (the gentle giants), it was not a consideration due to it's size but these dogs are great with kids. This picture amused me to my very core and the timing was perfect. Thank you Mike!

Bridge Pedal 2008

Here is a neat photo taken by Robert G. from the tram station at OHSU. This is the Providence Bridge Pedal of 2008. I have never actually done this event, but I have heard that it's a whole different experience reaching the top of these bridges and looking down at the city from an angle we rarely have the opportunity to enjoy.

'Dark' Bridge

Here is another great photo from our own Matt Dark. Once again, ineligible for a win, but I really liked this photo so I thought I would share it. The white light streaking across the frame is a bicyclist. Very nice Matt!

Sauvie Island Painter

Kathy M submitted this photo of an artist painting the horizon on Sauvie Island. I really like this photo. The painter is REALLY good and her lifelike photo makes the whole scene pretty trippy. It's like a picture of a picture...of a picture. Thanks for sharing this with us Kathy.

Draw Bridge

Shelly S. submits this photo this week of a barge passing below the Burnside Bridge. Shelly states: "This is also from my last Sat Market outing. As my friend was getting something to eat, I wandered over to the river and got there just in time for a bridge raising! Love that 'a river runs through it' in our beautiful little city..." Personally, it doesn't matter how old I get, I always get geeked out by these events...except when it's during rush-hour.

Black Swan

Heidi W. Submitted this photo knowing she couldn't win with the following comments: "Yes, I work at World Cup Coffee. I just had to send in this picture of this black swan. It comes to visit our houseboat on the Columbia River almost daily. This beautiful, obviously domesticated creature, eats gently right out of your hand. Pretty rare in the wild here, we think, as they are native to Australia. We love him/her!" Thank you Heidi (Driver Extraordinaire)!

Week 14 Winner

This weeks winner is John K. with this photo of the Mt. Tabor Pumphouse #5. All the ratings were very divers this week, but this came through the judging process as the clear winner. We receive a lot of amazing photo's and I honestly dread the conclusion of this contest at the end of the month. Thank you John for this photo.

Eastbank Esplanade

Last, but certainly not least… Satara R. has submitted this photo of the Eastbank Esplanade. Great photo Satara, I am a sucker for uniformity (not a common Portland mentality, I know).

This will be our last photo for this week as Satara slipped in just under the wire. Our weekly winner will be announced later this afternoon. There are only three weeks left in the competition, so please submit away!

Portland Fungus

This photo was submitted from one of our own employees. Matt Dark has been one of our prized baristas for years. He recently moved into our office sales division as a driver, but he is still ineligible to win the contest. This doesn’t mean I can’t show off his work. Matt has some great pictures on his own site linked at the bottom of our right-side column. Thanks Matt.

Shameless...but Shiny

You look at this photo from Mark M. and I know what your thinking. Luckily he said it so I don't have to: "This is shameless advertising on my part, but the photos are creative and I am of amateur standing. :)" Mark is a good and loyal customer so... well, you know! I do actually like the photo though, probably because it's so shiny. Thank you Mark!

Koin and Lamp

We recieved several last minute installments into this weeks photo contest including this one from Robert G. A mix of Portlands old and new in one photo he called "The Koin and Lamp". Great photo Robert, thank you.

Skidmore Bluffs

Mimi L. writes: Hi, "I wanted to submit my photo of what is popularly known as the 'Skidmore Bluffs'. This is basically a patch of grass at the west end of Skidmore, sitting on Mocks Crest, the bluff overlooking the Willamette River below. You won’t find softball fields or rose gardens here, just some of the best views in Portland. You’ll have downtown and Forest Park on the opposite bank, and the industrial riverside areas and Union Pacific’s Albina railyard directly below (which explains why this spot is popular with the hobos). It’s a great spot to watch the sun set over the West Hills and contemplate life."

More Community Fun...

I won't lie, this photo contest is a lot of fun for all of us here at World Cup Coffee & Tea. Our reason for doing though is simply that we are a small community roaster and take great pride in the people that support us. Portland is an amazing town for several reasons including it's people and it's beauty. This contest allowed us to showcase both so it has been our pleasure. It gets even better when those that participate in the contest also understand what we are about.

With that said, I had to share a recent message from John K. (a contestant):

"Thank you for running the contest, Ken. I've been enjoying seeing all the entries - it's a really nice addition to the community, having a place to share our little views of it. I'm regularly struck by the number of people in Portland that are passionate about doing something in their private lives. Speaking of which, in case you have any interest in classical music, or know others that do, there's a group I'm peripherally involved with (I maintain their web site) called the Oregon Sinfonietta - people who pool their talents 4 times a year for performances. They'll be doing a free concert this Sunday, the 7th, at 3:00 PM. Details at www.cmsomus.org , if you are looking for an alternative to football."

Mt. Tabor's Pumphouse #5

I love this photo from John K. It looks like a scene from some European spy movie. I look at it and expect some seedy character to step from the shadows at any moment. In actuality, it is an evening photo of the pump-house at Mt. Tabor’s Reservoir 5. Great photo from my neck of the woods John, thank you.

Interior Designer Needed...

It is often a designer’s ambition to create a home that brings the outdoors in. Some would argue that Frank Lloyd Wright started the trend, but it’s all the rage in today’s age. This image captured by Anthony B. may take this to an extreme. Seriously cool photo Anthony, thank you! One question…where is this?

North Park

"...this week I would like to enter 'North Park'....taken on Monday, 11/01/10 at North Park Blocks. I have come to find that just about every photo comes down to timing. I took this shot two separate days, then rain interrupted my process, then the next day I go back for a third time and there was a park cleanup crew who had taken all the leaves away...and also there were cars parked in front of the building.....timing, timing, timing...this is what makes photography so much fun!...thanks again...Adam T." There is nothing left for me to add except great photo Adam, thank you.

Bridges and Beauty...

This great photo was sent in by Monica S. who puts it best when she wrote: “The bridges of Portland are such a wonder to me. The beauty and the architecture of the St. John's is no exception. Looking at this picture, I am caught up in the moment and can't help but feel taken away to another time when Old Town was the new town and those toy horses randomly strewn throughout the city were the mode of transportation. But the street signs lining the bridge always bring me back to the present.”

Fall Fractals

Here is another great photo from John W. with the following narrative: “Fall is my favorite time of year and out walking this morning the leaves near my home are magnificent. I call this picture FALL FRACTALS. It always amazes me to see how nature creates a palette of colors arranged in such a beautiful fashion. On this Halloween, this is definitely a TREAT!”

Halloween Gourds

Kathy M kicks us off this week with this photo titled “Halloween Gourds”. The colors of fall are captured in more than just the leaves that clog our drains and hide the dog poo in yards and sidewalks. It really is a beautiful time of year. It’s just a good thing it’s followed by the cold of winter and its sterile colors of white and blue.
